Re: DVD

DVD is here.

But, there's no software. And nothing really imminent. $240 is a bit stiff, when you can buy 24X CDROMs for $60.

I have heard of a few games in development for DVD. Mostly these larger adventure-game types that currently span multiple CDs like Wing Commander and Journeyman Project.

The only good reason to get a DVD now is if you plan to watch movies routed to your television. I've never liked playing movies on my computer, myself, because I find the machine noise intrusive. Does that $240 kit include a good decoder?

I wouldn't buy my CDROM (or anything else for that matter) from inCOMPetent USA, though.

You might want to look into an ABIT TX5 motherboard equipped with an AMD K6-233. You can get that duo for under $250, and your machine will be MORE THAN TWICE AS FAST.

CDROMS I like Toshiba and TEAC. Panasonic/Matsushita units and NEC units are okay. Avoid Mitsumi, they have DAC problems.
