All the hoopla the last few days about Celeron's underperformance is complete BS. The first Celeron, code named Covington, which has no L2 cache, was never purported by Intel to have great performance. It is just a placeholder, put on the market so that PC makers who want to have a low end PC with intel inside, can start doing software (OS) validation on it, drivers validation, design verification testing with the other hardware on the motherboard, regulatory testing (UL, FCC, CE Mark), all on the PII and slot 1 design. By the time all this is done, the much more powerful second Celeron, Mendocino is probably available. So, after a little more testing is done on it, Mendocino is undoubtably the Celeron processor that the Dells, Gateways, Hewlett Packards, IBMs etc. of the world ship most of their low cost PCs with. This is so obvious of a (mini) roadmap and strategy by Intel, that why couldn't even the morons of CNBC have figured it out? OTOH, how many technical people do they have? Zilch, zero, nada. So, I answer my own question. In any event, as companies, AMD and NSM/Cyrix are toast, as they will be beaten out at the low, medium and especially the high end by Intel, where they have absolutely nothing to compete with Merced.
