I haven't done any x86 assembler for a while either but it's all register maniplation., so if both operands are outside the 64k
address space two loads and two pops are required, one operand outside= one load and one pop. The examples I gave are 16 bit where:

op code 16 bit address
8d 46 e8 lea ax,WORD PTR

I suspect that when I finally get MSFT 32 application studio
running ($16.50 VS 4.21 what a bloated mess) I will see

op code 32 bit address
8d 46 e8 aa aa lea ax,WORD PTR

Which means more overhead and slower performance (i.e. bigger programs
run slower). This is compensated for in some operations: double word
math that can be performed in one operation rather than 2 single
words operations in addition to some kind of overflow operation within
a 16 bit OS.

As far as scaler processing, a small footprint program will benefit
from it also so the relative advantage should remain the same.

The purpose of this whole exposition is that you have to be
careful in accepting all the marketing hype "Newer is always
better" and do some investigation first. It's as if the computer
indutry is run by ex-used car salesmen with no mechanics to refute
them.

P.S. I missed the Z-80. My computer collection starts with
a KIM-1 (6502 CPU). Sometimes I put the board next to the
latest Pentium board and marvel how far we've gone in the last 20 years.
