MacOS Lite on handhelds, rumored by Jan99 will presumably run Java, but I think that the Java potential on handhelds is for embedded apps or net applets. It remains to be seen what market AAPL has in mind for the Newton replacement.

IMO, this is not big potential for AAPL. Neither is Jobs taking CEO role.

Big AAPL stock-moving potentials, for the record:
- Yellow Box on Windows direct from MSFT
- Licensee's for QuickTime3 (Sun/Java?)
- Sale or Spinoff/IPO of FileMaker Inc
- Major Rhapsody partners/developers
- AMP with industry backing
- Suprisingly profitable quarter with good sales (better share at CompUSA ?)

I'm looking forward to all of them ... : )

Victor, Welcome..you're a SI citizen now, as well as I, and have equal rights as such since you paid your taxes. Free Trial members liken to aliens, who have green cards (tempory visas) and can not vote nor overstay their welcome. This is democracy, with Bulls and Bears as the representing parties. Cheers, Dennis

Victor,

What I meant is that some shorts really aren't giving info; just giving their opinions, over and over. I don't see much point in arguing with an opinion or getting involved in silly fighting with people who are just enjoying getting others angry. That sort is mindless and just want to irritate. One of them, someone I've never addressed or spoken about, eric siegel, sent me an email just saying "you are a loser." It seems like people like that aren't worth the time of day, and that there's no advantage in arguing with them. These are like very young children, trying to cause a fuss. I would distinguish them from the more thoughtful shorts, like my pal, van.

Anyway, even if you don't agree with this, we agree that free memberships are not the problem. I object to a "class" attitude, of paying versus free memberships. I think many of the jerks here are paying members and many of the wiser contributors are free members. All memberships on SI were permanently free till fairly recently.

Apple's getting a lot of good attention from the press and the stock has performed very well, so the shorts are getting SCARED, and that is why they are flocking to our thread to try to make a fuss. It's a great contrarian sign to have them showing up here, talking about how Apple stock is going to ZERO, while it's sitting very near its high.

Linda

I think that one of the more immediate big effects of JAVA OS will be on *hand held 'devices'.* What do you know about AAPL's plans in this direction.

Apple plans to run MacOS on its handheld, and MacOS will eventually incorporate Rhapsody's Java compatibility, so ultimately Apple handhelds will be able to take advantage of Java handheld apps.

The other thing is that most proponents of NCs (Sun, IBM, Oracle) see it as primarily running Java apps.

I suspect that in both cases, i.e. Apple's NCs as well as handhelds (assuming they are under development, and not just rumors), will benefit more from the Mac application base, initially, than from a Java app base. The Java strategy is a long-term one. One of the reasons NCs haven't taken off is that there aren't enough apps to justify them. As the platform with the second largest app support, the Mac stands a chance of being the first successful NC launch.
