Re -- I know from experience that IBM and Compaq have probably the most stringent component qualification and quality assurance programs in the industry. Do you really think that either company would risk their reputations on unreliable products?

No. They dont risk their quality assurance where it counts, in their large volume markets.

For lower volume, consumer markets, the requirements are different, and a warranty would solve the reliabilty issue.

Furthermore, if you look at Compaq's low end Presario's with K6, their speakers and other components are low end, out modeled.
