jbe- Well-knowing Alex's tenacity-I started pulling out reference books. I have the third edition of Fowler also, and on page 848 under 3A(legitimate uses), they use this example: I could not be close to anyone who I thought was rejected by God. My Harbrace's says: Pronoun before 'I think, he says and so on': When one of these expressions comes between the pronoun and its verb, take special care not to use the wrong case. Gene is a man who we know is honest. Yawn! I feel as if I should put my hair in a bun and wear bifocals! Why do I love this stuff? Is it an illness? A mutant gene?
