Here is my understanding (hope its not redundant).

Why would a maker of something like a copier, fax machine, air bag etc... care about having a MSFT endorsement? Buyers don't care if it has Microsoft software embedded so why would manufacturers allow Microsoft in.

Items like cellular phones are more interesting. If you are Motorola or Nortel or Siemens, why give Microsoft a chance at dominating your industry? The phones that will sell in volume will not have full operating systems for a VERY long time, IMO. Now as Microsoft goes to real-time to attack the volume markets, things will get more interesting. Then you might have a fight in cell phones like there was/is in PC's. If you resist Microsoft and buyers eventually associate cell phones with Microsoft, maybe the adopters of Microsoft win and others are left flapping in the WIND. But its too early to tell anyway so... WIND's going higher.

You can't be alive and not enjoy watching this emerging industry mature.

I couldn't agree more!

With one minor exception, I believe this is great news for WIND.

1. Bill Gates has expressed a sincere interest in Embedded Systems-- and specifically in real time embedded systems. Analysts who have ignored the industry will now have to investigate and, in so doing, will discover WIND.

2. The industry will have to be re-evaluated, not as a red headed step-child (apologies to all red-headed step-children), but as a viable sector with great potential. Mr. Gates would certainly not exert much effort if the industry were worth only the few hundred million that WIND, INTS,MWAR, and MENT currently represent.

3. Mr. Gates has admitted he does hot have a RTOS (numerous posters have tried to convince us he already owned one).

4. Mr. Gates has announced a target date for a RTOS. Allen has already added a factor to that date and I submit he has been kind.

I would offer one comment to Ron Ablemann: If you have not yet found an acceptable formula for dealing with the auto industry, you need some fresh thoughts and innovative tactics. I would love to see some design wins from that group within a year!!

The aspect of this situation that disturbs me is the threat of acquisition. I agree this increases the possibilities and it would be a crime to see WIND acquired at this point. The real fun is only beginning!!
