Thanks for finding the great Nitinol site Sri. I thought I would post a little information on American BioMed's stents in case anyone is interested in our company's designs in R&D.

Lately there has been a lot of speculation that older stent designs are losing market share for a number of reasons. One of the most desirable qualities that newer stents have is a combination of flexibility and strength.

ABMI has patented a unique endless loop design which can be used with different metals other than stainless steel. Therefore it is possible to produce a more flexible but extremely strong design which will reduce the likelihood of any necessary retreatment of the affected area while making it easier to use.

There is a lot of information at that site as you promised:

Here is an excerpt:

Woven NiTi Wires

Fine NiTi shape memory or superelastic wires can be woven into cylindrical shapes for various applications. One such application is vascular stents to reinforce blood vessels. The stent is crushed and inserted through a cannula into the proper location in the blood vessel. Upon warming above its transformation temperature, the stent returns to its trained cylindrical shape and provides reinforcement to the walls of the blood vessel. Such stents can also be deployed through superelastic mechanisms.

American BioMed recently received notice of allowance for a patent for the delivery system for these stents. The actual patent should be granted around six months from now:

Perhaps the most interesting patented design for American BioMed is for the bifurcated stent. This stent has a
unique Y shaped stent that can be used in anything from the large blood vessels of the aortic bifurcation to any smaller bifurcated blood vessel. Blood vessels often bifurcate so this technology should prove highly useful. I mean lets think about it shall we:

The use of this Y stent instead of two separate individual stents will reduce the need for additional surgical access.

This will be great for both the doctor and the patient!

It will cut down on the surgical time and and eliminate the need for a second and potentially dangerous surgical prep on the opposite side of the groin.

Using these stents will be faster for the physician and less distressful for the patient!

Unfortunately these stents are not yet on the market. They have to go through further FDA testing before they are approved but you can certainly see why the technology that is patented here is so exciting.

The stent market is growing rapidly. American BioMed now has two patents and one patent pending for the delivery system for their stents. This is a very lucrative market and this is just one of the exciting technologies that ABMI is involved in.

GO ABMI!
