(QCOM) received a $117 million contract from Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd. (GSTRF) to manufacture and supply portable and fixed code division multiple access telephones. In a press release Friday, Qualcomm said the telephones will operate on Globalstar's low-Earth-orbit satellite-based digital communications system. Under the contract, Qualcomm will also deliver vehicle kits that will allow hands-free operation from within a vehicle. Qualcomm's Globalstar tri-mode portable telephone will provide worldwide access to the Globalstar network, as well as access to cellular networks using CDMA technology or analog AMPS technology.
