This is my first time here, and I promise to be shorter next time. I've followed the Nextel comments with interest, especially yours on ...DC to Boston re: "Direct Connect". I believe this feature will be the single largest differentiator in the marketplace for some time.
Nextel came to my attention about six months ago, when it was my lot to determine what was so necessary that was driving our telecom bills sky high in the Western U.S. I visited an office in the Mid-West where everyone, it seemed, had a Nextel attached to a belt or purse or clipboard. To a person, they swear by it. These are service professionals with years and years of pagers and cell phone experience. These hardened short and long range travelers are ga-ga over the direct connect feature. (This is the feature whereby the phone becomes like a walkie-talkie - only crossing over many States, instead of within a town and remains clear.) I was hooked after one ten second 'direct-connect' between Chicago and California, end of story. It seems very big in the West, just catching on in the East, where many have never heard of it.

Then, there are thousands of people that have variations of this issue: Remember the famous commercial "I've fallen and I can't get up?" I see a close but not exactly parallel opportunity using Direct Connect feature. It will find YOU directly when your mother can't find her glasses, is all upset and just needs a soothing word now, or after the meeting your in, not at 8 tonight when you get home or call the hotel for messages. What Nextel does is remove all the inconvenience of wireless technology, the dialing, paging, waiting, returning calls, etc. Nextel has solved it with an integrated unit with typical advanced cellphone features, none of them as important as *Direct Connect*. They should make the slogan "Nextel - Walkie-Talkie to the World". It's a virtual 'hotline' for older parents & children, whose needs cannot always wait. It frees one to go anywhere anytime, and yet be found via two-way communications *immediately* via a polite chirp or vibration. Some Bosses that find it annoying when you leave your office, or work from home, will be satisfied with pushing a button to find you. Nextel seems also superior in situations where traditional cell phones and pagers don't work (certain rooms or buildings that you come to know about).

So, thank you to all of you emotional, analytical, technical, and other contributions that help quantifying my opinion of Nextel. I hope the above helps you to complete the picture of why one person thinks the product is such a winner from the user side of the house.
