One Year, One Million DVD Movies Sold -- Best Buy Sells One Millionth
DVD Movie By One Year Anniversary - Tuesday March 31, 11:50 am EST

MINNEAPOLIS, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- One year ago, Best Buy Co., Inc.
(NYSE: BBY - news) was the first national retailer to launch the
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) hardware with a limited selection of
software titles. The one-year anniversary of that launch marks the
sale of Best Buy's one-millionth DVD movie while maintaining its
leading marketshare position.

''This is a historic moment for the video industry,'' said Best Buy
President Brad Anderson. ''DVD movies are selling at a rate faster
than when the music industry launched CDs. The public embraced the
conversions from LP, game cartridges, cassettes, and floppies to discs
and this indicates that consumers have fully embraced DVD, too.''

In 1997, Best Buy launched DVD in 74 of its stores with five hardware
models and a modest assortment of 23 movie titles from Warner Home
Video. Two months after the launch, Best Buy rolled the hardware to
all 272 locations nationwide. The Company continued to add software
titles, with more than 500 DVD movie titles currently available. Today
box office movies, such as Air Force One, are released simultaneously
in DVD and VHS formats.

Warner Home Video President Warren Lieberfarb said, ''A million DVDs
sold by Best Buy alone shows DVD is here to stay. Studios are adopting
it and retailers, like Best Buy, are selling it because consumer demand
for DVD is strong.''

This summer, Best Buy will expand its DVD software area in preparation
for the more than 1,500 movie titles available from nearly all major
studios.

Best Buy's interactive, in-store displays allow consumers to experience
the full capabilities of DVD. DVD provides enormous digital storage
space with exceptional picture and theater-quality Dolby Digital(TM)
Surround sound. DVD, similar in size and shape to a CD, is an easy-to-
use, highly collectible packaged medium, offering movies in multiple
screen formats, including the original theatrical widescreen version.
An interactive, on-screen menu allows DVD users to switch among
multiple language tracks and/or subtitles.

''DVD has launched the video and audio industries into the digital
age, bringing consumers a great quality digital product,'' said CEMA
President Gary Shapiro. ''The consumer electronics industry's belief
in DVD is showcased by the number of manufacturers supporting this
product.''

Minneapolis-based Best Buy Co., Inc. retails name brand consumer
electronics, personal computers, entertainment software and appliances.
The Company is ranked 200 on the Fortune 500 with annual revenues of
$8.4 billion. Best Buy operates 285 locations in 32 states and its
common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange, symbol BBY.
