Intel sees strong Asia PC growth

PENANG, Malaysia, April 2 (Reuters) - The personal computer market in Asia continues to be strong despite the regional economic downturn, Intel Corp general manager for Asia Pacific John Davies said on Thursday.

He said that looking at 14 countries within Asia excluding Japan, ''what we see here is business across the whole of Asia...that PC (market) continues a robust growth.''

Other indicators Intel was monitoring, including original equipment manufacturer demand and mother board production, suggested the trend was still positive, Davies said.

''It's four to five countries having a tougher time on a temporary basis,'' he told a news briefing, referring to the countries most severely affected by the regional economic downturn.

That shortfall was made up by other countries like China, India and Pakistan which were seeing positive growth, Davies said.

At the day-long briefing for Asian reporters in its facility in the northern island state of Penang, Intel also introduced its first Pentium II processor for mobile personal computers.

The company said the new processor, offered at speeds of 233 Megahertz and 266 Megahertz, ''brings a new level of performance and computing capability not previously available to mobile PC users.''

Intel microprocessors provide the brain power of 90 percent of all personal computers in the world.

The mobile computer chip made available on Thursday offers the same level of performance as those used in desktops. The chips are priced at $2,995 each, said Intel.
