If the Checkfree Board authorizes a stock buyback, it doesn't mean the company is going to rush out and buy in a lot of stock, nor would I want them to. It's just another weapon in the arsenal to help increase shareholder value, if needed and, in my opinion, should be held in reserve for when the stock market trashes our stock (as we have recently witnessed). I would like to see the number of shares reduced to offset the the dilution created in recent months by acquisitions for stock and by stock option awards, and from the potential dilution from the newly created warrants.
I would expect Board members would authorize such a buyback only if they were satisfied the earnings growth and cash buildup we are all anticipating was at hand. A stock buyback authorization, were it to take place at this time, would be an important confirmation signal to investors. The Board wouldn't have to wait for a couple more quarters, they know the future numbers now. One thing about this type of business is that it is relatively predictable,
