Japan reeling again. Wonder how this will affect Sony and HiFUD:

Tokyo stocks plummeted on the release of a worse-than-expected Tankan, the quarterly survey of Japanese business sentiment. The most closely watched section of the survey, the diffusion index for major manufacturers, slipped to -31 from -11 in the December Tankan. Market expectations were for it to come in at -23. Bad news is bad news in Japan: The Nikkei fell 538.76, or 3.3%, to close at 15,702.90. Sony (SNE:NYSE ADR) Chairman Norio Ohga warned that the Japanese economy is on the verge of collapsing.

Here are some thoughts regarding the drawing inferences as to Iomega's earnings from reports of Ingram sales.

The proportion of Ingrams sales to South America, Europe and Asia are unlikely to representative of the proportions for all of Iomega's sales. At best, we could make inferences about the portion of the market to which Ingram sells.

To the extent that the proportions are similar, differences in unit profits from one market to another are still not accounted for.

If we knew the percentage increase in all of Ingram's sales for the last quarter relative to Ingram's sales for the year ago quarter, we might accept/ignore the problems cited above. But, we don't know the percentage. We don't even have a sample from which we can make an estimate subject to some estimate of error. We do have reports of sales for certain limited time periods. But, we don't have corresponding estimates for the year ago quarter.

What we do have are reports that may make stockholders feel better. No more.

So, make us feel better. Keep up the reports.
