Anytime that I mention something positive about Japan I usually get swamped by responses pointing out all the negatives. So maybe the cup is filled to the brim with pessimists on Japan and the tide is about to turn.

Having said that, here is my bare leg for the dogs to chew on. I think the Big Bang will have a greater positive influence on Japan than people are expecting. My belief is based on my confidence in free markets. If Japanese investors are freed to find the highest return, I believe it will unleash a chain reaction that will result in Japan adopting "true capitalism" and not the controlled variety that they presently use. I use as a comparison the massive effects the lifting of deposit rate limits had on the banking system and the economy in the United States. The result is similar because each eliminated a source of cheap deposits to the banking system and brought competition for deposits. I think this competition will have far reaching effects in Japan over the next few years.
