This one's good for a quote, Robert.

"RealPlayer is becoming ubiquitous on the Internet. It's unfortunate but similar to the browser situation with Netscape. The move is anti-consumer," said Stevens. "As far as the consumer is concerned, they're getting a raw deal." he added.

Peter Bell, Internet server product manager for Microsoft UK disagrees, he claims there is no official standard and Microsoft is only acting on feedback from its customers. "We started on parallel tracks(with RealNetworks) but in the absence of a dominant standard, all streaming software is incompatible," he said.

Now, there wouldn't happen to be any substantiation of this alleged "customer feedback" anywhere, would there? Or, is Microsoft just "giving the customers what they want" like with the 2 1/2 year old Windows95 retail release that the OEMs won't touch? Clearly, the market has spoken, as always. Bill's taking us where we want to go!

Cheers, Dan.
