On a point of order - WordPerfect were bought by Corel and together are going strong. Lotus where bought by IBM and together ain't doing to bad. Novell are still a dominant (though fading) supplier of operating systems.

Perhaps the lesson is that the IT industry is all about change, and therefore eat or be eaten. If you are going to be eaten make yourself as attractive as possible, that way your shareholders get maximum reward.
