Ramsey - Is there an advantage to "overlay" a mobil network over a WLL or do you have to start from scratch again?

I would be surprised if there weren't some advantage, but a lot of it is going to depend on how the manufacturers design their equipment. How modular is it? At a best case they are going to have to replace and/or add system controllers, modify their billing software, and retune their links. And I'm sure there will be all sorts of unexpected problems which only become apparent when someone tries to make the switch (I know of no real-world cases where someone has made the switch. Anyone else?). That said, hopefully Qualcomm is keeping this in the back of their minds as they design new generations of equipment, although I'm sure their most important concern is cost and ease-of-use for their WLL systems (as it should be).

PS As for the political problems being easy - remember how long it took for the US to break up AT&T? And how long has PanAmSat been trying to break into Intelsat's domain? Not that it won't happen eventually, but I'm not holding my breath.
