With anything pertaining to the Internet, security is a hot topic. "Security and authentication are going to be the issues in 1998," says John Fomook, director of product marketing for application servers at Oracle. "Security has been kicked around as an issue on the Internet, but people didn't go much past user name and password. With the application server, you have a security infrastructure where you can push it all the way out to the user." Support for SSL 3.0 as well as support for electronic certificates (which will enable the use of smart cards in the future) are the topics of the day.
