From the FWIW department. About one month ago, I posted the results of my shopping expedition (for a new PC) with regard to availability of DVD drives. Gist of post was that even the big guys (DELL, Gateway, etc.) didn't seem to be up to snuff in the sense of not offering them straight out of the box, i.e., as a standard configuration. Only available on top end models, and even then you had to press--ask for the option. Almost gave Shane heart failure when I reported that the guy at DELL said they didn't have DVD in stock! He was wrong of course, but it tended to demonstrate that they were a long way from a mainstream item.
Well folks, that was then and this is now as the saying goes. Office Depot is advertising in the San Francisco Chronicle $2200 machines w/DVD "standard" and this includes a monitor mind you. Doubt this has come in time to pump this qtr's earnings, but have to believe it bodes well for next quarter. Mike Doyle
