<<<I think they screen very carefully for
teratogenic effects, very early in drug development and screening is tougher than the thalidomide's time.>>>

During "the thalidomide time" no teratogenesis testing was done. I believe that the thalidomide tragedy was the crtical event that brought about laws that made it mandatory for teratogenesis studies.

Can anyone verify this?

It should be pointed out that in fact, the male penis and female clitoris are both erectile tissue of the same origin that under the influence of hormonal difference between males and females develop differently.

Only my speculation, but it would seem that for those females unable to achieve orgasm, VIAGRA may have a role to play. The article also points out that VIAGRA may have some good effects for post menopausal females. Link to the full article below for details beyond the extract provided.

Cross-Gender Sex Pill
A new drug designed to treat impotence in men may have surprisingly similar effects in women
By ARNOLD MANN

Irwin Goldstein could hardly wait for the FDA to approve Viagra. The
renowned Boston University urologist is so excited about last week's
approval of the first-ever impotence pill for men that he is opening a new sexual-dysfunction clinic, and will soon begin prescribing the drug--for women...How effective Viagra is in women awaits the outcome of the tests. The FDA and Pfizer, the manufacturer, do not encourage women to use it. "We strongly recommend against women taking their husband's pills or physicians using it off-label," says Raymond Rosen, professor of psychiatry at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, who will chair the Cape Cod meeting.
