Just building on what Clark said but... One of the largest reasons that we pulled out of the Depression was WWII and supplying stuff to the Allies in the lend lease program initially and finally when we joined the party. Germanys woes and the need to blame someone were two of the largest reasons that the Nazis took power. And all of this happened before the "great" economies of the world got as heavily innertwined as they are now.

Basically what I am trying to say is that a depression is not only a monetary phonomenon but also a huge social one. Depressions are the times when some of the really bad (and sometimes good) things happen in the world.
