News about Novartis in the San Diego paper today. A new genetics research center will open here this year financed by a $250 million grant from Novartis. The facility will study how individual genes contribute to diseases and develop treatments for them.

The facility will be called Novartis Institute for Functional Genomics, and will employ about 100 people, including 20 principal scientists. The $250 million grant should finance the lab's entire operation for a decade. The company will have first rights to products coming from the new lab, but would pay a fee or royalty for use of discoveries.
