Like you, I feel new price pressures and lower demand are perhaps the most significant reasons to short. A few more: A recent steep run-up on no significant corporate news, lack of participation in the most recent market euphoria, a significant slowing in component price reductions, ever-increasing US labor costs, a risky and perhaps costly new marketing scheme (the stores/outlets), an increase in insider trading, and the recent arrival of general investor disenchantment with box makers. One concern I have is that funds from the big write-off that they took a quarter ago may somehow re-emerge in their next report making it appear good.

Best wishes

RJ

If you are short Gateway, you will also want to look into the way they are handling the ALR acquisition. Apparently, Gateway is doing very poorly and some of the channel guys are swearing they will never buy ALR servers again. These areticles were in Computer Reseller News a few months back (November I think) just search on Gateway and ALR and you will find them.
