This thread is great!!!!

Where else can you get such intelligent conversation AND Cole Porter?!

By the way, my wife actually encouraged my purchase of a grammar book last night (one of those little Barron's introductory numbers)...what a treasure chest for only $7. I love her.

My Buffalo, NY upbringing has left me with some strange hold-over vernacular and drives her crazy sometimes. How about, "I went over John's house today." Yikes!

What do you call these "bent" phrases anyway?

Happy to have found this thread...

Paul

Grrrr... Ameritrade is a bad enough brokerage already, but their insipid television commercials are worse. Now they've added tense errors to their rap sheet:

Woman to man in recent commercial: "I'd never do anything ever to hurt you, unless I have to."

It should be "unless I had to," right???

(jbe, the "Grrrr" was the sound of my teeth being set on edge.)
