Intel plans US$5 billion capex in 98 year

SYDNEY, April 3 (Reuters) - U.S. microchip maker Intel Corp said on Friday it would
spend about US$5 billion on capital expenditure in calendar 1998.

''We are spending about US$5 billion this year in capital expenditure, over a billion of
that will probably be spent in the Asia-Pacific region on our existing facilities in China,
Malaysia, the Philippines,'' Intel president Craig Barrett told reporters here during a
one-day visit to Australia.

Barrett plans to meet Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Friday, but would not
comment on whether he would talk to the Australian leader about possible investment
plans here.

The Australian Financial Review newspaper reported on Wednesday that Intel was
considering a manufacturing investment in Australia worth up to A$6 billion.

However, Intel later described the report as ''pure speculation.''

''I have a meeting with the Prime Minister this afternoon I expect we will talk about the
IT industry in general, what Australia is doing, what other countries are doing,'' said
Barrett, who is also Intel's chief operating officer.

He said Intel had a full-time team that looks for sites for future expansion, and that the
team had visited Australia.

Barrett said that Intel also had investment teams for venture capital and software content.

''We deal with lots of different types of investment activities, we have a venture capital
organisation, which last year did some US$300 million worth of venture capital
investments,'' said Barrett.

''We have a software content group, which this year has a budget of somewhere
between $100 million and $200 million,'' he said.
