Lee, thanks for the link. It's much too lengthy an article for me to respond to in detail, but to a great extent the article does mirror much of my concerns.

But I want to raise an issue that we spend virtually no time thinking about. Assuming that at the lower levels of the job chain we increase productivity by replacing human workers with machines, what does that imply during times of economic slowdown. If machines are replacing blue-collar workers in producing the goods, and if we can't all be white-collar type managers, who will be left to buy the good?
