I cannot imagine why INTC would buy MCHP. The last thing INTC would want is another 8-bit microcontroller line and commodity non-volatile memories. As a Microchip shareholder I would like to see it, but it seems far-fetched to me.

Why did Microchip go to direct sales recently? Were they unhappy with the reps or did they think that the company was big enough to afford a sales staff? Maybe it was those expensive worldwide sales meetings (needed to cut costs by eliminating all the rep attendees).
