9/16/97 Multimedia Daily (Pg. Unavail. Online) 1997 WL 7069026 Multimedia Daily Copyright (c) 1997 Telecommunications Reports International, Inc. Tuesday, September 16, 1997 4; 179 B&N SIGNS INFOSPACE, WEBCRAWLER BarnesandNoble.com yesterday announced two partnerships, the first with InfoSpace Inc., and the second with Internet search engine and services company Excite Inc. (NASDAQ: XCIT). In the "multi-year" deal with InfoSpace, the provider of Internet directory services will launch its online commerce activities by selling Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) books. In return, InfoSpace directories will be available to BarnesandNoble.com users. InfoSpace will receive a commission for each book sold for all sales transactions generated through links from the InfoSpace site. InfoSpace also will receive advertising revenues. In the deal with Excite, BarnesandNoble.com will become the exclusive bookseller on Excite's WebCrawler Internet search service for two years. WebCrawler, which sports 15 channels, will feature BarnesandNoble.com content throughout the service, and BarnesandNoble.com will be the "centerpiece" of the Arts & Books Channel. As with the InfoSpace deal, Excite will receive a percentage of online book transactions generated on WebCrawler. BarnesandNoble.com and competitor Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) in recent months have embarked on a smorgasbord of affiliations and deals, both exclusive and non-exclusive. Some of these include the rivals settling for different offerings from the same Internet services. * Excite maintains the exclusive agreement between BarnesandNoble.com and WebCrawler, but in July Excite named Amazon.com as its exclusive bookseller on its topics-based channels (MMD 7/8/97). * America Online Inc. named BarnesandNoble.com as its exclusive bookseller on its closed online service, but Amazon.com is the queen of the jungle on AOL.com and AOL's NetFind search engine (MMD 6/3/97, 5/28/97). * Yahoo! Inc., striking a different path from AOL and Excite, has signed Amazon.com as its premiere, although not exclusive, online bookseller (MMD 7/7/97). Another Amazon.com exclusive is Prodigy Services Corp. Amazon.com Spokeswoman Kay Dangaard told Multimedia Daily that the company recently named its 15,000th affiliate Web sites. In these non-exclusive arrangements, sites that link book titles to the Amazon.com site receive a commission if a visitor to that site decides to order particular books. * Lycos Inc. took yet another path, naming BarnesandNoble.com as its exclusive dealer (MMD 8/21/97). Other BarnesandNoble.com exclusives include EarthLink Network Inc., BellSouth.net and WebTV Networks Inc. (MMD 9/10/97). Barnes & Noble closed yesterday at $48.75, up 37.5 cents; Amazon.com closed at $37.125, falling sharply by $7.125; Excite closed at $24, down $1.375.
