I agree, it would just lower the floor on the death spiral.
The company must know this....so is there something else to be read into this news release, like a threat to those converting at these prices. For example, the prefered holders who are friendly to the company may still be holding and could get a much bigger piece of the pie after another 99% drop in the stock price!
