Jyoti, You are struggling with the same confusion I am. I keep waiting to see the market tank and it continues to defy gravity. I just got some info that a company was likely to report earnings considerably below expectations. My first thought was here is a short opportunity. Then, upon looking again, I find that last quarter the company warned, and the stock went up! So, I have the answer. You and I should go get drunk and give your wife our credit cards. Jyoti: That was a beautifully written and extremely evocative portrait of the current market. It should be published. You are not alone in this situation, of course. I've been neither long nor short the market as a whole since 1990 when I lost a bunch of money on S&P puts. That taught me not to speculate more then I was willing to lose. The last time I was solidly long was November 1987! Still, interesting investment situations continue to occur, such as hedges in Closed End Funds or obscure deals like EMITF (see SI thread). I laughed at your post to "pass pass" today on TLK. You made it so complicated for him, he'll probably never ask again. regards, peter
