Tom,

" I said that we should be respectful of people and their belief systems"

I that what you meant to say?

"That does not mean, though, that Christians should not try to be understanding and respectful of other's belief systems,"

Even your corrected statement is false. We certainly must be respectful of all people, but never respectful of "their belief systems" when those belief systems reject Christ and the Gospels in any way.

Since you essentially repeated your statement, you must actually believe it. The moment I would start respecting a religion or belief system that rejects or denigrates Christ I would feel a total betryal of Christ in my heart. Maybe there's somethng I'm missing here.

"I was not saying, nor did I say, that Christians should place other "religions" in high regard or esteem. I said that we should be respectful of people and their belief systems"

By definition, respect of another "religion" or belief system means to "regard and esteem".

I think I know what you were trying to do but Christ was never preached in that fashion by the Apostles and early disciples.
A heart that is not humble and ready to face reality is not ready for the Gospel. Appeasement never brings humility nor prepares the heart.
