Doug,

Tesco rents top drives for around $2800/day. It more or less replaces the swivel and kelly. It runs up and down on rails. On land rigs I do not think there is a crew savings component to it.

On permanent mounted top drives they are frequently paired with an iron roughneck that handles the pipe handling duties. It adds cost but also is a safety thing for semis and drill ships.

Value added equipment, Where you trade time for money and it is a good thing if the value of the time you save is worth more than the money they pay you to rent your equipment.
