[Class Action]

Hi Pat & all, got a notice in the mail today of three class action lawsuits that were consolidated w/ an April 27th court date. Filled on behalf of all Amati stockholders of record on or after Oct. 1st. Don't think we liked the merger too much. :} Re: Wstl. Don't have time to get into it right now as it seems most stockholders agreed w/ the Ti deal. I thought it worth mentioning, maybe someone covered this already.

Regards,

Dug

[ Taiwan deployment ]

Pat, have you seen anything on the Taiwan ADSL deployment. I'm curious if Chunghwa Telecom is like the ICG CLEC and is working with Lucent/Westell for 5ESS ADSL integration.

Lucent Technologies Awarded US$60 Million in Switching Systems Contracts By Chunghwa Telecom of Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced it has been awarded seven contracts valued at over US$60 million by Chunghwa Telecom, the largest telecom system operator in Taiwan.

The contracts include the supply and installation of Lucent Technologies' 5ESS(R)-2000 switching system, covering northern, southern and central Taiwan. Implementation is expected to be completed by early next year.

''We are extremely proud to have been selected for this wide scale project which will be critical in helping Chunghwa Telecom meet the growing demand for telecommunications access,'' said Jason Chi, president of Lucent Technologies Taiwan. ''Lucent has more than 10 years of experience in Taiwan with local manufacturing and installation resources, and we are confident we will deliver supreme quality systems to meet our customer requirements.''

The contracts were awarded through an open tender process. This is Chunghwa Telecom's first switching procurement project since it changed its switching procurement policy to adopt an open tender process last year. Prior to this new procurement practice, Chunghwa Telecom purchased its switching equipment from its chosen vendors through a tender or price negotiation process.

Lucent Technologies has been operating in Taiwan since 1983, and has a full scale switching operation, including marketing, sales, engineering, manufacturing, after sales services and repairs capabilities. With more than 4.5 million lines of 5ESS switch lines installed in Taiwan, the country has become one of Lucent's largest 5ESS switch deployment bases outside of U.S.

In other business, in October 1997, Lucent Technologies successfully deployed in Taiwan the initial phase of the first national Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) 1800 network, connecting networks for KG Telecom and Tuntex Telecom, two of Taiwan's licensed wireless service providers. Lucent has already installed base stations and Mobile Switching Centers (MSC) under two contracts with a total of US$140 million signed separately with KG Telecom and Tuntex Telecom in April, 1997. The projects will be completed by the end of this year....
