Mr Glenn Shevchenko reports
The joint venture partners have approved a $2.5 million exploration program
for the Sarah Lake property which is an integral part of the Labrador based
South Voisey Bay project that is operated by Donner Minerals. The overall
exploration budget for the South Voisey Bay project has been increased to
$14.7 million
with approximately 17% of the budget developed to the
company's property.
The 1998 exploration program will consist of two phases with phase 1
consisting of 4,000m of diamond drilling and geophysical surveys while
phase 2 will consist of a further 4,000m of diamond drilling. The phase 2
program will be contingent upon favourable results from the first phase.
The geophysical program will consist of a gravity survey (400 by 400m
spacing) covering over 90% of the property along with electromagnetic
surveys. A number of test EM surveys will be conducted over areas of known
mineralization to determine the geophysical technique that best defines the
drill targets. Once resolved, then the surveys will be expanded to cover
the favourable trends.
The company's property is adjacent to the Donner/Northern Abitibi claims
where three drill holes intersected Voisey Bay-style massive sulphide
mineralization, including the final drill hole of 1997 which intersected
15m of massive sulphide grading 2% combined nickel-copper. The
mineralization in these drill holes, which are approximately 1km west of
the Sarah Lake property, is hosted in a black troctolite unit that extends
eastward onto the company's ground. Data from the two holes (SVB97-90 and
92) that were drilled on Major General's ground indicate a thickening of
this mineralized troctolite onto the company's claims. Furthermore, the
down-hole electromagnetic survey on drill hole SVB97-92 has defined a
strong off-hole conductor that is interpreted to be approximately 100m in
thickness.
The property is jointly owned by Major General (40%) and Donner (60%) with
Teck Corp retaining the right to earn 50% of Donner's interest.
Drilling on the South Voisey Bay project is expected to begin in early May.
