RIG COUNT: April 3 - April 10, 1998

Gulf of Mexico offshore rig count declines

HOUSTON: The Gulf of Mexico mobile offshore drilling rig count declined by two rigs since last week,
according to Offshore Data Services' weekly mobile offshore rig count.

Despite the two-rig decline in the Gulf of Mexico rig count, only one rig actually came off contract. The other
change resulted from one contracted rig departing the Gulf to work in another region, and a rig without a contract
coincidentally arriving in the U.S. from South America. The two rig moves resulted in no net change in the Gulf of
Mexico fleet size, which remains 176 offshore drilling units. With 169 of these rigs under contract, U.S. Gulf
offshore rig utilization is 96.0 percent.

The European offshore rig count is unchanged from last week. Fleet size remains 110 rigs, 106 of which are
under contract. European offshore rig fleet utilization is 96.4 percent.

Worldwide, a two-rig net decline in the rig count was recorded week-to-week. In addition to the one Gulf of
Mexico rig that was released, a rig in South America also is idle. With 583 of the world's 609 mobile offshore
drilling units now under contract, worldwide offshore rig utilization is 95.7 percent.
