< Now this may sound courageous for this
man but it was a devastating life event for a teenage girl grappling
with all the sexual confusion of a teen.>

Yes...I have seen similar things, and it is heartbreaking. While this is not the complete answer to what you describe penni, fortunately today there are more and more psychotherapists and counselling services who are able to help families and others in dealing with these particular issues before major decisions are made. However, unfortunately, there will always be many who will not consider this approach, and to not do so when it is indicated and available is really irresponsible.

Best,
Charliss

Penni, I wanted you to know that I agree with you wholeheartedly. Even though in this area of sexual identity I am a very tolerant person, believing that it is important to be true to our own feelings about ourselves, and to grow and change when we are compelled to do that, as a parent I think there needs to be a moratorium on complete identity changes from the time our children are born until they reach adulthood. Anything else strikes me as purely selfish.

If someone has already waited until their own adulthood to address essential issues about sexual identity, and taken on the immense responsibility of mothering or fathering children, surely that parent can indulge themselves by having plenty of therapy to do soul-searching, and plan for a future as a transsexual, without doing it during the impressionable childhoods of his/her beloved children.

We are parents first and foremost during the impressionable years, and anyone who forgets the sanctity of the parental roles and responsibilities violates his children in some serious way.
