This morning on MS Investor stock Finder I ran a Cornerstone Growth 50 stock portfolio having a) Market Cap >=150,000,000; b) EPS Growth year vs year >= 1; c) Price to Sales <= 1.5 and d) % Price Change Last Year >= 129.3
Next, I ran a Reasonable Runaways 50 stock group having a) Market Cap >= 150,000,000; b) Price to Sales <= 1; and c) % Price Change Last Year >= 127.8
Cornerstone Growth: APK,AATT,ASF,ADVP,ABF,AGI,AMES,ASTE,BCH,BBY,CON ,CROS,DLJ,DY,WIRE,ESRX,FNF,FAF,FMY,FRED,FRAG,GPX, HNH,JEF,LAND,LEH,LIN,MHO,MWL,MYG,MHK,MCCO,NC, NRVH,NAV,ODP,OCQ,PHHM,RYL,SCR.A,SKYW,SRSV,STGE, SZA,SUT,TWMC,U,VRLN,VWRX,WSTF
Reasonable Runaways: ABF,ABFS,AD,ADVP,AGI,AHI,ALLIF,AMES,APK,ASF,ASTE,BBY, BFT,BGL,CON,EGGS,FAF,FCY,FMY,FRED,FSH,GPX,HNH,JALL, KBH,LEH,MCCO,MHK,MHO,MIKL,MLG,MWL,NAV,NC,NRVH, NSS,ODP,PRMX,PTX,RYL,SCR.A,SZA,U,UIS,USTR,VRLN, VWRX,WHX,WOL,WSTF (Type errors possible)
What's the point? At first blush, approximately 20 (40%) don't show up on each others list. I did a quick look at EPS and approximately 50% of the Reasonable Runaways that didn't make the Cornestone had a decrease in EPS from the previous year. Additionally, a number of the Cornerstone group have a Price to Sales above 1.
You can also compare the two on a year by year basis if you have both JPO's two books. For a variety of reasons, I prefer the Cornerstone selection criteria.
On a separate but related matter. I've taken the 50 Cornerstone and , using Point and Figure Charting, entered the Marketplayer competition from 3/27/98 to 4/24/98. Current portfolio is ESRX,FAF,LEH,LIN,MYG,RYL,STGE,SZA,TWMC,ASF,PHHM,MWL
I didn't get in until 3/31/98 because I was out of town. As of today, my competition return is 1.82%, and rank is 391/1,757. Next month I'll try the value group. Do I expect to compete with the top group of month-to-month gunslingers? Probably not. But ---- let's go for one full year and I think I could be very competitive. |
