Supply diversifies from conventional TV/VCRs into VCD and DVD combos
Latest releases offer improved and larger screens, digital surround sound and karaoke effects

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT in the combination TV industry is moving in three different directions. Among China makers, the popular opinion is that TVs combined with video CD players have a good future, and therefore R&D and manufacturing resources are being focused on such products. These firms have released some advanced models with screen sizes as big as 29 inches. Other upgrades involve the addition of digital functions, including digital surround sound processing, and the use of super-flat picture tubes for better image reproduction.

Portable TV makers in Taiwan, who also offer combo models, are moving away from both lines because of keen competition from China. There are a few exceptions - Action Electronics still offers TV/VCR sets but is unenthusiastic about adopting VCD technology.

Taking a different road altogether, Korean A/V electronics firms have begun looking at DVD. In general, the future of video products lies in this technology, they say; but it will take some time yet before the actual products can be released to the market. For the moment, they are offering TV/VCR models with screen sizes of up to 29 inches, and a 33-inch unit is under development.

Price points for products in this report start at $400 for a TV/VCD unit and $200 for a TV/VCR model. - Asian Sources Electronics, May 1998
