Hi, Bobby. With Ur psychology training/bkgrnd, I thot U might esp. enjoy this story/ experience I had today. In support of a biz associate, I attended (as an paying exhibitor) a local Countywide Ham Radio Swap Meet. Tables were replete w/power packs, new and old shortwave gear, the latest Yesua Ham "thumb-sized" radios, old tube testors, new & old manuals, etc. You get the idea. Realizing I knew nothing about radios except for the fact I'd won their GRANNNNNNNNND Prize, a 3" Kenwood H/R and where to put the replacement nicad battery, I decided to provide some "counter balance" by creating an off-t'wall-exhibit...yep, a gold panning demostration/display, set among my old HO Locomotives, mid-west weathervanes, scsi boards, and other dodads on my 16' of "retail space." A dishpan served as my water source, and the complete pannning kit including "gold impregnant concentrates" practice sands, I baited the floating gold pan w/thumb sized nuggets and waited. Being "different" worked its charm and soon sales were humming. But THAT isn't the story. You see, a couple rows over, there was a small mom & pop retailer, who called themselves "Survival Tek" Their target audience is the ham operator who thrives in the emergency ham application realm, i.e., survivalist, catering to the fear of lack of abundance and disaster woven into our corporate psyche. Intrigued by a product I'd been admiring in one of my "off the wall gadget catalogs," I spied same on their tables of "survival wares." Remembering I was at a Swap Meet, I selected and weighed a nice sized Oregon nugget and headed off to barter as I'd seen others do all day. Much to my surprise, these "survivalists" couldn't think of a thing to do with my proferred nugget and insisted on fiat. Only in America, eh?
