Amazon Inks Netscape Netcenter Exclusive Bookseller Deal
Martyn Williams. Amazon

TOKYO, JAPAN, 1997 OCT 20 (NB).com Inc. [NASDAQ:AMZN] has signed an
agreement with Netscape Communications Corporation [NASDAQ:NCSP] that
makes it exclusive bookseller on the Netscape Netcenter home page. The
deal, financial terms of which were not disclosed, follows similar
agreements Amazon.com has previously announced.

Under the terms of the deal, Amazon.com will provide a co-branded
online storefront at the Netscape home page, home.netscape.com .
The new service, which will feature "book titles and editorial content
tailored specifically to the Netscape Netcenter audience," is expected

to launch before the end of 1997, said Amazon.com.

The site will also receive promotion with "above the fold" visibility
on the Netcenter, which will mean all visitors to the site see a button
linking to the book ordering service. The Netcenter is the name given to

the recently relaunched Netscape home page and aims to provide news,
information and promotional items aimed at business users.

Previously, Amazon.com announced it had secured exclusive bookseller
status with other major Web sites including Digital Equipment
Corporation's [NYSE:DEC] Altavista search engine,
altavista.digital.com , Prodigy Services Corporation's Prodigy
Shopping Network, shopnet.prodigy.com , Excite, Inc's
[NASDAQ:XCIT] Excite search engine, excite.com , America
Online, Inc's [NYSE:AOL] AOL.com and AOL NetFind search service,
aol.com , and Yahoo! Inc's [NASDAQ:YHOO] Yahoo! Internet
index, yahoo.com .

Amazon.com, which brands itself as "Earth's Biggest Bookstore," is a
major online bookseller. It's online catalog, at amazon.com ,

holds 2.5 million entries. Second quarter results for 1997, recently

announced, showed sales of $27.9 million and a net loss of $6.7
million.
