But to take a charitable deduction for providing the same support to one's own parents is NOT ALLOWED??? Yeah man, it sucks

Wow, you mean you can't be subsidized by other taxpayers to care for your own parents? That DOES suck. Can I send you a check?

Providing care to a charitable HOME is from your heart for the good of the COMMUNITY and therefore is deductible to the extent of your actual out-of-pocket COSTS.

Caring for a FAMILY MEMBER is of a PERSONAL NATURE, not a COMMUNITY BENEFIT, per se. Therefore the community, via a tax deduction, does not give you a tax deduction... UNLESS you qualify under the MEDICAL DEDUCTION rules!!
