New buy rating

RESEARCH ALERT - Tribasa started

MEXICO CITY, April 13 (Reuters) - Paribas said on Monday it is initiating coverage of Mexican construction firm Grupo Tribasa with a buy rating.

-- ''Tribasa has been significantly transformed from the company on the brink of insolvency in 1995 to a competitive, internationally diversified construction company,'' Paribas analyst Rod
Harada wrote in announcing the coverage.

-- Debt was reduced through a debt equity swap in the fourth quarter of 1997 and the government bailout of the Mexican toll road program in the third quarter of last year removed
loss-plagued investments from its books, Paribas said.

-- ''The winning of the Cadereyta refinery project (from state oil and gas monopoly Pemex) in 4Q97 shows Tribasa's success at diversifying its business into energy-related projects,'' Harada
wrote. ''The Cadereyta project increased its hard backlog by 45 percent to US$1.1 billion.''

-- Paribas projects annual EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) growth of 29 percent during the next two years and set a price target of 45 pesos within 18
months, upside of about 72 percent.

-- Tribasa shares had not traded early Monday and were unchanged at 26.10 pesos. In New York, the ADRs were unchanged at $6.0.
