Did you ever contemplate what improvement in quality of products and services we could have if, for example, 50% of the money spent on advertising were spent instead on improving products and service?

Yes. In Q1 1998, Ameritrade spent about $25 million on advertising.

It's a little like that constant struggle between education spending and national defense spending.

Especially nowadays, when a serious single-purpose web server costs less than $3,000, it's shameful that Ameritrade's so awful. It wouldn't surprise me if Ameritrade were actually located in some teenager's college dorm room (which, incidentally, would probably mean that it's time to buy Ameritrade stock).
