New satelite boxes "support" AC3..........................

The upgrade drops the wideband dataport and adds a newly implemented optical Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) jack. The connection will enable the receiver to send Dolby Digital (aka AC-3) surround sound signals onto an A/V receiver or surround sound processor equipped with an AC-3 signal decoder.

For the first time, DS5451 owners with DD decoding equipment will be able to enjoy 5.1 discreet channels from DBS programming.

Spomer said the DS5451 will carry the same $449 retail price as the DS5450. The system will also include a software upgrade for the SurfGuide electronic program guide (EPG) function. This will add a full two hours of content instead of one hour in previous models.

SurfGuide displays seven channels of programs at a time, enabling consumers to surf up and down the guide while the current show stays active in the background. The full title and listing appears at the bottom of the screen, and when the desired program is found, it can be accessed by pressing a button.

''We believe Dolby Digital will be an additional credibility factor for showing what DSS can do,'' Spomer said. ''RCA will be the first to have this capability.''

Meanwhile, DSS competitors EchoStar and Primestar are both working on systems that will add Dolby Digital capability to their services. EchoStar is working on an adapter that will connect to the IRD dataport to enable Dolby Digital delivery. Primestar plans to offer AC-3 capability to its new high-powered service, although initial receivers in the test rollout for the 119-degree DBS service later this month will not be AC-3 ready, according to a Primestar spokesperson. Details on that will be announced shortly.

DirecTv told TWICE in January that it was looking at offering AC-3 programming around midyear.
