**OT** Hi "Shotgun":

Family's safety or risk of jail? Absolutely no contest.

Family's safety or savings account? Definitely no contest.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone keeping a gun (ultra-responsibly, of course) for protection at home. It just sickens me to see the result of some of these cases where the true victim ends up with the short end. And I guess I've never felt I needed a gun for protection (as long as I have my sword, anyway <vbg>).

I don't really agree with the spare tire analogy. Also, I think that most people probably aren't equipped to pull the trigger, particularly in a highly stressful situation. IMO, for some people the risk of being armed definitely outweighs the advantages. When you say you might need to kill the deranged intruder, for example, that seems to suggest that you would take the time to identify the intruder and determine their mental capacity. I would venture to say that most people holding a shotgun and listening to an intruder approach aren't going to have the time or the calm demeanor to make those judgments.

I actually got the idea on the e-mail after listening to the posters here complain about getting spammed. I used to have my e-mail posted (but then the private message feature was only recently added).

Regards.

Diana, I read somewhere that the risks of being hurt by your own weapon is indeed greater than the probability of stopping a criminal. The fewer guns we have in society, the better. My uncle was shot to death on his way to see a cardiologist. My next door neighbor's son, a policeman, was held at bay in his home by three teenager robbers using his own gun as a threat. My mother's neighbor's grandson (3 years old) was accidentally shot to death while playing with his father's gun.

These are all horror stories that have touched me personally. I have no personal story of a criminal that was fended off with a gun. On the other hand, I know of a burglar who attempted to break into my house who was driven off by the sound of my Dobermans barks.

Regards,

Paul
