The reason it didn't work for Apple is because computers have changed so much in ten years. It is hard to think of an Apple IIc (I used them in high school in 1990-2) and a G3 as being similar....

It didn't work for Apple, despite their hefty educational discounts. Why should it work for Wintel?

Because their giving out a lot more candy.

Systems Admin's point of view: Geeky nerd administering a school's computer system suddenly exalted by a major software company and treated like a VIP at special MSFT conventions.

Student's point of view: Lot's of new FREE stuff.

I recently met up with a graphic design student from Temple U at an Adclub of New York networking social. He said he used to like Mac's. But now he's a big microsoft fan. He cites getting "over three thousand dollars worth of free software" as the source of his loyalty. Unfortunately, I was under the influence of several stiff martinis and was unable to grill him on the details of this FREE software. "Was it beta-ware? Was it some kind of educational grant? Did he download it off the MSFT site?" I dunno.

Along this line. I also know some of the multi-media developers at Lucent who also showed loyalty to MSFT due to the free software he downloaded from the MSFT site.

Many of the Mac people I know do not know of some of the free stuff they can get at the Apple sites. Personally, I too notice there is more free stuff on MSFT's sites. Most of the Mac stuff I get I have to scrounge from third party shareware sites. With MSFT it's once-stop-shopping. However, I am not easily lured into a stranger's automobile with the promise of free candy.

By the way. Here's a good place to on free seminars at Apple:
