Resource Problems

As many MB Traders know, Real Tick III draws heavily on your computer's resources and the resource utilization increases significantly over the trading day. If resources drop enough, you are forced to close programs and / or reboot, which can be disconcerting, if it happens during a ' hot trade '.

To alleviate this problem while they fix it, I have done some testing and upgrading this weekend with a view to increasing my starting resources and to establish which programs leak or fail to return resources, so that I can avoid them whenever I am running Real Tick III. To monitor resources, I used Microsoft's Rsrcmtr.exe program which I found it in the Window's directory.

To increase starting resources, I installed the latest fixes / releases of all drivers such as ATI's video driver, Creative's soundblaster driver, etc as well as any programs that I might want to use. For example, I found that different releases of ATI's video drivers yielded different starting resource numbers. I also verified that I had installed all the important Windows 95 and Explorer patches from Microsoft's download site. (There are probably 20 or so). All of this effort yielded me about 4-5% more resources on startup, so that I know have 97%+ available with my Pentium 200 MMX.

I also increased my 64 MB of ram to 128 MB and manually set and optimized the Windows 95 disk cache. While this eliminated most disk activity and made the computer overall a little faster, it had little effect on the resource readings.

In subsequent testing, I found the following programs retain resources on closing.

Uses, Retains

Win 95 Winsock 5% 3%
MS IE 4.01 w OE Mail 9% 3%
MS Excel ver 7.0 5% 3%
MS Wordpad 5% 3%
MS Word ver 7.0 7% 3%
Equis Metastock ver 6.5 9% 3%

* This common 3% retained makes me wonder if it is caused by the compiler used ???

I found the latest versions of the following programs operate properly. That is, after you load, run and close them, you will return to your previous free resource level.

Uses, Retains

Real Tick III 39% 0%
MS IE ver 4.01 w/o Mail 4% 0%
NS Communicator ver 4.04 7% 0%
Eudora Mail ver 3.0.5 4% 0%
MIRC 2% 0%
MS Notepad 3% 0%

* Real Tick was set up with 1 page containing 2 Level II Market Maker Windows including Time & Sales, 2 intraday charts, 1 multiquote window, 1 account info window and 4 Market Minder windows. On my Pentium 200 MMX, the Real Tick III resource usage increases 10-15% to about 49-54% over the course of a trading day. When you add in the Winsock & MIRC, I am down to 35+% resources, and I am sure people with slower, less optimized machines have either had to re-boot or reduce the number of Real Tick windows that they use.

In conclusion, if you are using Real Tick III, have a resource problem but need to use your browser or mail, you can minimize it by loading and unloading programs as you need them from the group that does not retain resources.

Hope this helps someone else.

Funk, you're an idiot! Sorry, I don't usually talk like that, but your post is insulting.

If you had read my post, you would know I use CyBerTrader, and also that I have previously used Watley. What more disclosure do "you" need or deserve? Now do you understand the "scope and position" of my comments?

If you read my post you would also have known that I said either M.B. Trading or CyBerTrader was the best way to go. I said nothing negative about M.B. and even said I had heard it was good, which is true. I tried to be fair and objective, helpful to the other readers. You may notice that I even mentioned M.B. Trading before CyBerTrader. I gave no preference, just honest comments on my personal experience, which is the specific purpose of this forum.

Perhaps YOU could more fully disclose the facts about yourself. You don't seem to me to be objective.

Further, who do you think you are telling me not to "trash" A.B. Watlely? I have personally used their "service" and I was offering my comments and opinions to the person who inquired. After all, isn't that what this thread is really for? Are you afraid of other people's opinions, or do you somehow feel it your duty to make sure only your opinions get posted here? Is this your personal forum? I don't THINK so.

So, funk, don't start telling any of us what this thread is "better" served as. It's not your right. I do respect your opinion, however, but after your comments here, not too much.

Also, I might add that YOUR recent post to the CyBerTrader thread was very much rude and out of line. Made you look very silly indeed. I'm sure the other members feel the same way. You are obviously not very objective yourself. I can't believe you would question my objectivity or employment.

Finally, regarding your comment about Watley, I don't care if they were on the cutting edge. I was a client there and I saw how inferior their product is and how extremely poor their service is. I think just about everyone knows that, including you. If not, then why is everyone now leaving Watley for either M.B. Trading or CyBerTrader? Answer: Because Watley became more worthless than Datek.

These are all my opinions and I'm sure the readers will all realize that and take them as such. So, funk, you don't have to police the place. I believe free speech is still in order here.

By the way, speaking of full disclosure as you do, I publish my full name with all my posts. Why don't you do the same? Are you ashamed of yours?

WD
