Dear Judy, congrats on Your Merlot - You deserve it - <!>. Regarding INTC, let me give You my BIAS first of all, since everybody got his/her own preferences and it's only fair to give Your friends a better view of Your position.. Ok, first of all, I don't like monopolies (believing heavily in consumer choice and Austrian Economics - Hayek etc.). So I don't like the arrogant behaviour INTC is displaying very often. For example when they tried to patent a "connector" (I mean the Slot-1 SCAM) just to lock out clonemakers from building on those chipsets. Then they sued alternative chipset vendors (SIS) or threatened them if they came out with a Slot-1/AGP solution. This is anticompetetive behaviour and I surely detest it. I got to point out I really welcome competition. But, I also believe that I ought to give credit where credit is due. My opinion about the CPU market is that the X86 camp will split emphasizes. Cyrix & AMD & IDTI will have a lock at the low end. Low end doesn't mean bad performance, though. It just means segment zero and segment one PC's (sub $1500-2000 PC's). INTC will experience problems in the midrange also, as AMD will be able to crank out more powerful offerings. I'm especially looking forward to the upcoming K6-3D+ (Plus !!) (not the K6-3D) due this fall. This baby should run at 333-400 Mhz and should use Socket-7 running at 100Mhz bus speed. INTC's attempt to recapture the lowend ("Celeron") with a Pentium-II castrate is going to fail. This chip is performance stripped and is easily outpaced by IDTI, AMD & NSM. Left for INTC is the high end. Here they are clearly pushing out. OK, the Slot-2 might be 1-2 months late. But, they are a sure threat to badly positioned UNIX server vendors (especially some RISC-old age player). I really feel that.. Unisys Sun (might be better positioned than the rest) SGI Apple will have problems to retain the segment from the Intel assault. I subscribe to the opinion that INTC might come under pressure as well. But those 4 players should have a pretty hard time. best wishes CROSSY BTW: I made my exam Friday (3 hours of continuous writing - economics)(. Really felt exhausted but also much better afterwards. Went downtown and had some glasses of Prosecco afterwards. However this pales in comparioson with Your 92 St. Francis Merlot..

Dear Judy, got some more from Tom's site (Intels Upcoming CPU's) "Slot 2 Looking a couple of more months down the road and into June/July this year, we can expect Intel's new Slot 2 CPUs to be launched. These CPUs include a L2 cache that runs at CPU clock speed, the cartridge these CPUs come in is huge, easily double the height of current Pentium II SECs. The Slot 2 CPUs will offer an amazing performance increase over Slot1, but they will be targeted only to the high end market like servers and high end workstations. The main chipset for these high end CPUs will be the 450NX chipset and you can see how strong Intel believes in the high end nature of this product when asking Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers about Slot 2 boards. Most of these motherboard manufacturers won't even make these boards, because they say that they haven't got the right kind of customers for these products. It's interesting though, that Slot 2 CPUs will also work with the BX chipset. Slot 2 will only come with 100 MHz front side bus. Slot M 'Slot M' will be the name for what you plug Intel's upcoming 'Merced' CPU into. This IA64 CPU is supposed to change everything in the PC market, but since it is at least 12 months down the line I'll restrain form commenting on it any further." Can elaborate further: the 450NX is nothing more than an adapted version (to Slot-2 architecture) of the assets Intel bought when they took over Corollary (this fall). It must have been a particularly hard task to incorporate this goody into their chip-portfolio. My own take is that INTC will be able to introduce the Slot-2 in JULY at latest. Pls. note that this CPU finally replaces the Pentium-Pro, which is a generation leap. The PPRO technology is 4 years old right now. Due for a replacement. INTC needs that badly. Another idea: NSM upcoming Cyrix 283Mhz-300 CPUs with a 100Mhz front bus should be 1) ultra-cheap to produce (0.25 micron in National's fabs) 2) 30% cheaper than AMD's K6-3D 3) Be faster in BUSINESS APPLICATIONS than AMD's K6-3D at the same speed rating This means that NSM could be nice pick on a fundamental basis. Will try to look for TA clues also. best wishes CROSSY
