While the NY Times article does not contain much that is new for long-time readers of this thread, it does have a cautiously upbeat theme and a few interesting tidbits.

The theme is that Merced is likely to make significant inroads into the mainframe and server markets and that competitors are "cowering" before the threat.

Among the tidbits are reminders of how many times Intel has beaten back challenges. One especially worth remembering is how the IBM-Motorola-Apple alliance was going to trounce poor 'ol Intel and its puny 486 chips. (Are you listening, AMD fans?)

Another tidbit is Andy Grove's prediction that it will be at least 5 years following its introduction before the Merced becomes the heart of Intel's business. The article author wryly notes that we've heard that before, most recently with Pentium.
